Haywarikuy: The Sacred Art of the Andean Offering
Haywarikuy: The Sacred Art of the Andean Offering
Join us for a sacred online gathering guided by our Andean paqo teachers, Victor Chura Quispe and Celia Samata Apaza, alongside Dora Fronek, as we step into one of the most beloved and time-honored practices of the Andean tradition: the building of a haywarikuy (also known as an ofrenda or despacho). Haywarikuy is a Quechua word meaning "to offer" or "to give," and it is the sacred act of extending a part of yourself outward with intention, gratitude, and love. It is a practice as old as the mountains themselves, carried forward through generations of those who understood that giving is a form of prayer.
Over four weeks, we will explore what an offering is, the meaning held within each sacred element, how to gather and prepare your own materials, and finally come together in a virtual group ceremony to build our offerings side by side.

Weekly Sessions:
Week #1: Sunday, June 7th; 6:00 pm EST
What is a Haywarikuy?: We begin by opening the doorway into the tradition of haywarikuy, exploring its roots in Andean cosmology, the spirit of ayni (sacred reciprocity) that animates every offering, and the many forms an ofrenda can take. Victor and Celia will share why we make offerings, who we make them to, and how this practice has been carried forward through generations of Andean wisdom keepers. Together we will begin to reflect on what we feel called to offer, and to whom.
Week #2: Sunday, June 14th; 6:00 pm EST
Gathering Your Elements: In this session we will explore the many sacred components that are woven into an ofrenda, including coca leaves, seeds, sweets, flowers, and other meaningful items. You will come to understand how these pieces speak to the apus, the ñustas, and Pachamama, and how to gather your own with care and intention as you prepare for the ceremony to come.
Week #3: Sunday, June 21st; 6:00 pm EST
The Art of Creating: In our third gathering, we turn our focus to the hands-on creation of your personal offering. This is the heart of the series, a guided and intentional weaving held in the energy of the group. Victor and Celia will walk us through the sacred process of building an ofrenda, sharing how attention, prayer, and presence shape every element we place. Together we will come to understand how the act of creating itself becomes a form of devotion.
Week #4: Sunday, June 28th; 6:00 pm EST
Virtual Group Haywarikuy Ceremony: We gather one final time in sacred space to complete and offer our haywarikuys together. Guided by Victor, Celia, and Dora, each participant will weave their own living prayer, placing each element with intention while held in the energy of the group. Victor will receive our prayers into the collective bundle, which will then be transmuted in the fire. This is a rare and powerful opportunity to receive direct ceremonial transmission from the comfort of your own altar space.

Why These Teachings Matter:
In the Andean tradition, the haywarikuy is one of the most sacred acts a human being can perform. It is a living prayer that restores balance between ourselves and the natural world. To build an ofrenda is to remember that we are not separate from the land, the mountains, or the waters, but in constant relationship with them. In a time when so much of the world has forgotten how to give back, learning this practice is a profound act of remembering, of healing, and of returning to ayni, or sacred reciprocity.
